ABOUT THE AUTHOR
My name is Diego. I was born in Sevilla, (South) Spain, but I'm currently living in the UK.
I began programming very early, starting with Commodore and Amstrad computers (old stuff, hehe). As many other programmers, my first steps were in Basic, but I promptly shifted to Assembler. I developed high skills with Z80 and 8086 processors in CP/M and MS-DOS environments.
After updating to the 80x86 family, I immediately put hands on the C and C++ languages. Combined with my assembler knowledge, they allowed me to make powerful stuff. If you're a programmer, you probably know that programming is practically a matter of technique and practice, it's like an art which skills are acquired through experience; once you master the art, you can program anything! Personally I think C++ and Assembler is the perfect combination to master the art of programming. Thus I began programming in any language that crossed my way: Visual C++, VisualBasic, VBScript, Java, JavaScript, HTML, SQL, Delphi, Fortran... This gave me the opportunity of start making some money in the IT field.
Besides, I had my Physics degree in University of Sevilla (Spain), specializing in Electronics. While studying I developed a special interest in numerical methods, a perfect combination of Science and programming. Additionally, numerical analyses provide a way of doing independent research without expensive equipment, but sincerely I was too busy to try something serious.
During my degree I carried out some professional activity in the business-programming field, providing me economical support. After my degree, I went on with the IT business for almost two years. But business programming was quite boring and no longer well paid. Besides, I missed Physics a lot, so finally I decided to change.
In 2003 I joined the Nanotechnology Group at Cranfield University (UK) to do my PhD. I'm currently working on nanostructured semiconductors for light emitting devices. Although it is a very demanding occupation, I try to find some spare time for my favourite hobby: programming.
